January 07: Vancouver Cherry Blossom Haiku Invitational 2009 Submit one original, unpublished English-language haiku.

January 31:Kikakuza Haibun Contest English haibun, no fees, 30 lines maximum including at least one haiku, entry by mail only.

January 31: The Anita Sadler Weiss Memorial Haiku Awards (by The Haiku Poets of Central Maryland), submit up to 15 haikus by mail only, fees are $1US per haiku.

February 14: Betty Drevniok award (Haiku Canada), $5 Cdn (in Canada) or $5 US (outside Canada) for up to 3 haiku.

February 14: Pinewood Haiku Contest. Winners will be published in the April issue of Wisteria. Limit of 3. No e-mail entries. Cost: $US2/poem or 3 poems for $US5.

February 15: Haiku Canada Anthology 2009, members can send up to five haiku for consideration to claudiarosemary@yahoo.com

February 28: Ito En Oi Ocha New Haiku Contest. Cash prizes (in yen), green tea products and inclusion in an anthology. Winning haiku will appear on Oi Ocha product packaging from August; results in July. Entrants are encouraged to "express themselves freely". Limit of 6 haiku. Cost: free. E-mail via the website.

February 28: Free XpresSion Haiku Contest. Cash prize for best single haiku of $A100; 1 sheet of 4 haiku is deemed to be 1 entry. Winners published in Free XpresSion. Cost: $A5/ sheet of 4 haiku; $A25/ 6 sheets. For details write to PO Box 4, West Hoxton, NSW 2171, Australia.

March 1: Jack Stamm Haiku Award. Cash prizes totalling $A175 with a competition anthology (1 copy free to each author selected). Results will be published in paper wasp in June, and the anthology in August. Haiku not to have been published on the internet. Cost: $A10 (from within Australia)/ $A12 (from NZ if paid in Australian currency)/ $US10 for each sheet of 3 haiku.

March 1 (received by): Robert Spiess Memorial Award. Cash prizes totalling $US175 and copies of Bob's books. Limit of 5 haiku on the theme of "speculation". Winning entries will be published in the (northern) summer issue of Modern Haiku and posted on the website. Cost: $US1/haiku.

March 17 (postmarked by): UkiaHaiku Festival An annual festival dedicated to haiku in Ukiah, California. 2 categories of interest to overseas entrants: Traditional Haiku (5-7-5), and Contemporary Haiku Adult (free form). Limit of 3 poems per entrant per category. Awards will be presented at the April 29 festival. Cost: Traditonal - free; Contemporary - $US5/haiku or $US10/2-3 haiku.

March 23:Robert Frost Poetry Festival Haiku Contest. Cash prizes totalling $US175. Limit of 3 poems, 3-line haiku only. Cost: $US10/3 haiku.

March 30: Early Registration for Haiku Canada Conference that will be held May 15-17 at University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC).

March 30: True Vine Summer Chapbook Contest. Cash prize of $US20, plus 20 copies of the chapbook. Send 8-12 haiku/senryu on the theme of summer (previously published poems acceptable). The chapbook will be available from June. No e-mail entries. Cost: Free.

March 31: Haiku Magazine Contest. Limit of 6 haiku. Results will be published in the (northern) spring/summer issue of Haiku magazine and winners and selected others in an anthology.

March 31 (received by): Mildred Kanterman Memorial Merit Book AwardsFor excellence in published haiku, translation, and criticism. Cash prizes totalling $US650. A list of winners will be published in Frogpond and the HSA website. Books must have been published in 2008 and clearly must contain a printed 2008 ©. An author or publisher may submit more than one title. Cost: Free.

March 31: Submission for DailyHaiku (Cycle 7), a print and daily online serial publication. Send ten unpublished haiku---no more, no less---contact information, and a 75 word bio to desk@dailyhaiku.org. Payment: One contributor copy of the print volume featuring your work.

April 15 (postmarked): Kaji Aso Studio Contest. For haiku, senryua, tanka, haiga and "concise" haibun. Cash prizes totalling $US450, plus the Elizabeth Searle Lamb Memorial Prize of $US50. The top 13 poems will be published in Dasoku.Cost: $US2/ 2 International Reply Coupons per poem. It is also possible to enter by text message.

April 30: Snapshot Press Haiku Calendar Contest. Cash prizes. Twelve haiku will be picked as monthly winners; 40 others will be runners-up. All will be published. Haiku should include a seasonal word or activity. Results announced on June 30. Entry fee$.

May 15-17: Haiku Canada Conference at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC)

May 29: "Genkissu! Spirits Up! Hekinan World Wide Haiku Contest" 2009 Send one haiku of 3 lines roughly following the 5-7-5 syllables style of haiku in English (unpublished, and not currently under consideration for publication or entered in any other competition. June 12 (postmarked by): The first Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum English Haiku Contest, maximum of 2 unpublished three lined haiku with a season word on one sheet of letter size paper or a postcard including the name, age, sex, nationality, address, and phone number, along with the poem. If applicant is a junior or senior high school student, also include name of the school, Participation is free. Haiku/senryu should seek to capture elements of the world of teens, including school, sports & entertainment (movies, music and books), relationships, technology, global issues and more. The emphasis will be on contemporary urban life, although nature is by no means excluded. Also accepted: one-line haiku and concrete haiku. Poems may be previously published and there is no limit on the quantity of haiku you may submit to Angela Leuck at acleuck@gmail.com.

Fee: 1000 yen by international postal money order or use IRC coupons. For this fee, you may submit up to three haibun entries.
